![]() This section contains the many kind reader comments sent to me regarding the usefulness of "Over the Airways" to their flying and training activities. While few publications enjoy universal reader appeal, "Over the Airwaves" is apparently filling a genuine information need among the aviation community. |

"Thank you for another great
issue. Bob, you have an unusual attitude about unusual
attitudes....this kind of training should be mandatory. Perhaps you
can write more about this some time. Actually doing these maneuvers
makes all the difference in ones confidence to control the aircraft.
Real training for real results. There is no substitute."
-- John Wagner "I fly Airbus A320s for
Philippine Airlines. I still fly light aircraft whenever I have the
opportunity. I've been a flight instructor since 1979 and find "Over
the Airwaves" extremely informative and enjoyable to read. It
refreshes my knowledge and continues my aviation education. Keep up
the great work. I admire your dedication and appreciate the effort
it takes to publish "Over the Airwaves." "Over the Airways has many good
articles about flying, which keeps our awareness sharp, which
hopefully will reduce accidents from pilot error." "I have been flying small
aircraft for over 50 years and have never failed to learn something
from your newsletters. Keep up the good work."
"I heard of your
publication from a fellow-flyer in Utica and have really
enjoyed the two copies that I've seen."
--Eric Austin, Baldwinsville, NY "I
present a Saturday seminar at my flight school, Galaxy
Aviation, UCA. I am a CFII and give a two hour seminar with
the first hour VFR material and the second hour IFR
refresher course. Your material came to me via one of my
members, Joyce Palmer and since that issue, June, I have
been using your material for both hours of my presentation.
We have a good size flight school and I have been
instructing for twenty plus years. You are doing a great
service for aviation so please continue to do so."
"I came across "Over the Airwaves" during a
Google search for aircraft safety. Before I knew it, I had
digressed into a 1-hour read of all the other topics
mentioned in the article. I'm hooked - good stuff!" "Great thought-provoking information!" "Hi Bob, Love your last Sept 25th newsletter. It is right on the mark ! As an independent part time CFI/CFII in New Jersey, I have actually flown with some of those private pilots who cannot handle a 12 kt crosswind . And consider that a day too windy and we should not fly !
Keep up the good work and looking forward to the next
issue."
-- Tony Kepler, New Jersey "Bob - I just wanted to tell you, thank you. I can’t tell you just how much I enjoy reading your “Over the Airwaves.” In the last year, I have been doing mostly commercial flying for a cargo company than flight instruction. Lets face it, in the commercial business many times we don’t think about those little idiosyncrasies or training techniques. It’s typically about getting there, on time. Your articles constantly
stimulate and refresh my flying skills. I continue to learn and
apply your articles in my daily flying. Reading your articles, one
should get credit toward the Wings Program. Improving knowledge and
safety....Hmm!" "My student sent me a copy of
"Over the Airwaves"...since I am and have been a member of NAFI,
I was surprised to not already know about it... Thanks" "I am a retired professional
pilot, ATP, 13,300 hrs., DC-3, Martin 202 & 404, Learjet, who has
enjoyed instructing in both small and large airplanes for many
years. I hold a Flight Instructor certificate with airplane
single-multiengine, instrument, and Ground Instructor Advanced and
Instrument. Additionally, I had served as a FAA Designated Pilot
Examiner for 30 years. In my retirement I write safety articles for
Aviation Digest and Aviation Safety magazines, and am presently
writing two books. I like the informal exchange of
experiences and expression of opinions presented by the readers and
the authors. Also, some of the techniques described are quite
educational and worthy of retaining in any instructor's archives;
they certainly stimulate thought." "Bob, you spend endless hours
writing your "Over the Airwaves." I hope your readers
appreciate your dedication and your love of aviation." "A fellow aviator told me about
this website. I think from what I read it is an excellent work on
promoting aviation safety. I am an airline pilot flying the Boeing
767 mainly to Anchorage. I fly a Super Cub and a few other types on
wheels and floats in the western US and Alaska. Thanks for the
excellent publication."
"Keep up the great work
with your newsletter."
--David, David St. George, MCFI, DPE, 141 Pilot Training <ehfc.net> "Thanks, Bob. Another nice job ... and wake-up call.
-- Jeff Myers, VP
Communications, AOPA
"Very impressive. My
friend and mechanic, Dennis Bleazard, sent me the latest
issue. I'm retired, and a Super Cub owner clinging to the
greasy underbelly of general aviation by my fingernails."
I think you're right on when
you talk about how horrible flight instruction is today. I
almost quit several times because of bad instruction.
-- Alex Silicz, Bakersfield, CA I am currently the Group
Commander of the Western New York Group Civil Air Patrol. Jim
Kaletta forwarded a copy to me and I think it is great. He is
planning to use "Over the Airwaves" for our monthly safety
meeting requirement. We expect all of the Group's CAP pilots to
sign up. If a pilot does not have e-mail he could review the
hard copy you provide at Akron prior to the flight. Thank you
for the information. "Nice pub, Bob. Worthwhile
stuff, not the same old crap. I have completed 251 instrument
ratings now, and kinda teach the same philosophy as you." "Bob: I have to tell you
that this newsletter is so well received, that it is often used
as a basis for our Saturday morning aviation ground classes at
Galaxy Aviation, Oneida County Airport, New York. The
owner/CFII is impressed with your ability to hit on important
and interesting issues and use them to relate to a topic he
might be covering that week. "A friend forwarded "Over the
Airwaves," and what a great friend indeed! Excellent newsletter." "Love your newsletter and pass
on the link to everyone I can think of." "I would like to complement you
on an outstanding publication. I very much enjoyed MDA Means Just
That in this edition. This type of article places a great deal
of reality to our flying activity which is critical to improving
decision making. This is the type of material that we use here at
Adam Aircraft in our training program." "What a great publication!" "I found your newsletter about 6
months ago and wrote at that time to say how much I enjoyed and
benefited from it. Since then I have introduced it to many friends -
all of whom share my sentiments. "Got the first issue from my
Instrument Instructor --looks like a great source of practical
information!"
"Larry Tatsch recommended and
forwarded your newsletter. I found it very, very timely and
informative. My second lesson (July) was 3000 ft, stall horn
blaring, engine roaring, nose in the air, indicated air speed
sitting at 40 knots, and my instructor is ecstatic. I clearly
did not understand why I was doing this. Your newsletter
containing: Why do slow flight? was heaven sent. I have signed
up for more. I sincerely thank you."
-- Richard Malsbury, Ringoes, NJ "One of the best
publications I have seen. Thank you very much for sharing it
with me." "Just received a copy of
your email from a friend, found it to be very well written and
informative." I found your site by
accident. I think the content is astounding ! It took me about 2
seconds to decide that I can only benefit long-term from this
kind of input. "I don't know how many
people respond to your very enjoyable and picture-painting
emails from Oshkosh, Bob--the tendency on my part is just to
read and sit back fantasizing and enjoy the ride--but I hope
some of your recipients are letting you know how really
enjoyable they are. Gotta go next year!" I won't repeat what others
have said other than to say your style is, "riveting." "Very Nice Publication.
Can't wait to read more!" I thoroughly enjoy "Over the
Airwaves". It's most informative and enlightening. Please keep
up the good writing.
"I'm a retired airline
pilot w/approx 25,000 hours. I think it's great and have
bookmarked the site so as to be able to read past issues. Thanks
for the great work!!"
-- Jack Ballard, Mercer, PA
I think this is one of the
finest publications for GA pilots I have ever seen. I learned a
great deal, and will definitely be looking forward to the next
issue. Keep up the outstanding work, and....THANK YOU!! (May you
go to sleep tonight knowing that because of your efforts someone
is alive today that would not have otherwise been alive. I know
that by reading this information, some pilot somewhere, and
probably several pilots, learned something that actually saved
their's and perhaps other's lives, so again I say "Thank you for
you work")
--Dan Bucklin Found "Over the Airwaves" on
the Internet and I just love it . . . full of information on all
aviation issues-keep up the good work. Very nice news letter!! I
like the wide ranging array of topics discussed. I think your newsletter is
one of the best on the net! "Hi Bob: I read your column
each time it comes out and then pass it along to my CFI and
other student pilots that were in my class. I think that every
CFI should be getting this publication and passing it along to
their students. Although a lot of the things that you mention
seem to pertain to the bigger schools in more populated areas,
it does make me feel better knowing I probably received some
very good training. Thanks again for the fine publication." "As always, OTA is
informative and very interesting. I like the idea of emailing
the contents of the next issue a week before it comes out, it
gives us time to ponder the subjects. Thanks again for the best
publication in aviation!" Thanks
again for another great issue of Over the Airwaves. I read with
interest your articles on security and GPS approaches and was
somewhat surprised with the article on FDC NOTAMS. Towards the
end of the article you state that the only way to get a copy of
the NTAP is by subscription. The NTAP is actually published on
the FAA's website and you can usually have access to the current
and immediate past editions. The URL is
http://www.faa.gov/NTAP/
I hope this helps
and thanks again for a great service to aviation. "Your solutions are right on target... the most important
benefit to all of your suggestions is not the cost saving but that
the "PILOT-ERROR INDUCED ACCIDENT WILL DECLINE" .. Keep up
the good work!" "I'm working towards my Masters of Science in Aeronautics
specializing in safety and management at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical
University in Daytona Beach, FL. I am a private pilot with hopes of
continuing my flying education. Currently, I'm on an internship with
Battelle doing aviation safety research for NASA and should be
graduating next May. "This is a great publication and when I took it to my flight
school, they now use it in prep of our Saturday AM classes." "I just read your latest newsletter and my first thought was,
"where does he find the time to do this twice per month?" I found
the articles informative and some entertaining (the flight with the
three high school students). I love reading about other pilots'
flight experiences. I look forward to your future newsletters."
Hey
Bob... I just LOVE "Over The Airwaves"!!! I have been
licensed for 35 years, (I soloed 35 years ago this coming
week, with only 3.5 hours of dual time.) My true love is
instrument flying and I am a "lifetime" subscriber to IFR,
the Magazine for the Accomplished Pilot. That publication
along with your publication should be mandatory reading for
everyone who flies whether they are instrument rated or not!
-- Bruce Blaney, Bethlehem, NH AOPA 01535504
Can't wait for next Sunday. Best reading material in 60
years. Keep up the good work. I'm sure it will help a lot of
the new & OLD pilots. After reading your material, I am
convinced that I was not ready for combat. Cross my heart.
-- John F. Lipiarz, Army Air Corps, WWII P-47 pilot I really enjoy reading your Over the Airwaves and look forward
to them each fortnight (two weekly for those that do not speak and
write the Queen's English <g>). Surprisingly, even though I am not
based in North America, much of what you write is VERY applicable to
us in my corner of the woods. I came across your publication "by
mistake" when it popped up on a Google search for some or other
flight safety item I was researching. I read what you had written
and signed up for the fortnightly E-Mail immediately! -- Bill Santos - East Providence, RI "Another great issue with lots of thought provoking items." I am a student pilot with just about 50 hours getting ready to
go for my checkride on Tuesday. My instructor ( a CFII with over
1000 hours) has been forwarding me your newsletter to reinforce many
of the concepts he's been teaching (lots of things well above the
requirements for the private... much in anticipation of going for an
Instrument rating). I find "Over the Airwaves" an enjoyable read
with valuable information. Bob: Thank
you for providing this valuable service! Great
newsletter! It came as a link on the Aviat Husky site. Thank you. Learned about "Over the Airwaves" via "Cherokee Chat". Really
admire people like you who publish helpful information. This is a great little paper(e-Mail) It is comprehensive and has
all the FAR's quoted per question. nice format and short so as not
to get boring. Keep up the good work. Very impressive sight. Lots of useful information. I cant wait
for the next issue - Thanks! I heard about this site at the Cherokee Pilot's Association. I think
this is a great resource for pilots. Read about you on the Piper Owners chat board. Great stuff. More
usable than your typical Flying or Plane and Pilot piece but more
professional than message board stuff. Great service.
"I really like your format and down
to earth writing style. Thanks for helping us stay current in our
knowledge. I am new to the
aviation industry and I find your publication very informative. Keep
up the good work and I look forward to the next issue. I just love
this newsletter. It is so informative it almost makes me feel
inferior in my flying skills. That is actually good, as I am keenly
aware of the need to "refresh" myself of all the necessary safety
info that a good pilot needs to stay current. I always hate to hear
the words "spin and stall" but your articles bring home the
importance of proper techniques to avoid such results. Thanks I am nearly 80
years old. Have approx 31,000 hours mostly flying for Piedmont
Airlines. From DC3's to Boeing 727's. Own and fly a Citabria. I
enjoyed all your articles and learned a lot. You are providing a
great service to aviation. Really enjoyed
your newsletter and look forward to reading future and back issues
as well. Great site. Thanks for your
efforts...lots of useful info. I have been reading back issues and
look forward to new issues. Read about the site in our club's
newsletter (East Hill Flying Club, Ithaca, NY). A superb
newsletter!!
I don't how I got on your mailing list, but I am glad I did, the
information you provide is excellent.
The detailed
information is fantastic. I look forward to learning from this
newsletter. It's as if I have just found another mentor to give me
sound guidance. Thank you! I’ll tell you something, the "Over the Airwaves" issues are the only reasons I look forward to Sundays (because normally Monday is the next day, which means school). Can’t wait until Sunday. Greg Barnhard, 15 year old flight student, Buffalo, NY "Over the
Airwaves" is very good and informative information for any Pilot or
aviation person I received a
copy of over the airwaves from someone on the piper chat list. I
like it a lot. Your newsletter
is brilliant. It's very helpful to a new pilot to hear some straight
talk about the risks associated with flying, and IFR flight in
particular. I'm a family man and I don't want to do any flying that
endangers my own or my passengers lives. Therefore, if I'm going to
fly in IMC conditions, it's only logical that my IFR training
includes as much actual flying in IMC as is practical. I really
enjoyed every aspect of your newsletter - the tributes, links,
everything. Thank you. My husband, who
has the same rating, forwarded your newsletter which seems the most
directly interesting one I've seen, as it covers issues that are
pertinent and thought provoking. Thanks for all your efforts
to keep us safe in the skies. Great News
Letter - keep them coming. I am a retired
professional pilot with over 20,000 hours as well as an aviation
writer/author and have written several popular aviation books (Wings
of Man - Capt. Dick Merrill, Corporate Flying, High Flight, etc).
Was co-founder of Professional Pilot in 1967 as served as part time
managing editor for 11 years. Like your aviation format. This
issue forwarded by a friend. THANKS! A very
informative site that I will share with my students and other
pilots! Great site! I
look forward to future publishings. I love your
site. Excellent info!
thanks! Friend passed
me the link to your site. Very well written, with sound information
and well presented. I will enjoy receiving this. Thanks so much. Thanks for the
opportunity to subscribe to a well done newsletter. Your writings
are easy to read and follow, and the mixture of topics is
appreciated. I heard about
this site in the 1st of Piper chat site. This is an excellent
newsletter, keep it up, please! I think the
site is terrific. Lots of useful information for an experienced
pilot. Great stuff. Got your site
from a friend Your newsletter is a great
resource for its readers. The information is presented in a
practical and meaningful way. Keep up the good work! Great articles! Thank you
for what you are doing for your students and for the rest of us out
there!!!! An email buddy
who is a pilot referred me to your page. I read it and loved it.
Thanks. Hello, Robert -
very nice work. This has to be
the absolute best newsletter/website devoted to flying and flight
safety available. I don't know how you do it on a 2-week basis but
please, please keep it up as long as you can.
A
great site with some good practical information, of which you
can never get too much! I stumbled
upon this site whilst browsing the
Piperowner.org web site and even though I’m way down
here in Australia,
the
information is very relevant. Keep up the good work. After
retirement from the airlines suddenly realized how much I had
forgotten about about general aviation...boy am I stupid....with
over 20,000 hours of "bus driving" now I have to do it all by
myself, quit GA flying in 1966 things have really changed...Love
your site, found out about it on the International Comanche net. Great news
letter with lots of tips and help. Great pub, keep
up the good work. I have a pilot
friend who sent me a copy of your newsletter and I just loved it.
SO-I signed up to receive it. The info in this newsletter is by far
the best I have seen and intend to use the info for safer flying
habits. Incredible
job! I've passed your link on to a few other aviators that could
use a dose of your knowledge, too! Thanks for sharing your
experience and information -- that's the kind of unselfish
"all-for-one and one-for-all" attitude that keeps me in awe of
the aviation community! Someone from
the Cherokee Pilots Assoc. posted the web address to your site. WOW!
very impressive and loaded w/ real useable info. I will be passing
your site URL on to others... Love your
articles. I saw a note about
your newsletter on the Pacific Northwest Chat Room and certainly am
impressed with the content and format. It's great! Saw your great
e-newsletter on the internet just by chance. Great stuff!
You're focus on safe is exemplary.
A friend sent me your "Over
The Airways" and it is a great job. I read every word and clicked on every
possible site. I anxiously await you next issue. Great work. I am an
ex AF fighter pilot. Fly a Mooney about 100 hours per year. Purchasing a new
Lancair 400 and will begin flying it in June. Also fly a Malibu Jet Prop.
Looking forward to future issues. Thanks for letting me join. Dan Schaeffer gave
me your name. Love what you write. GREAT STUFF!!!!! Great job with real life
flying info! Thank you... Great Webpage...!!!, sent
to me by my CFII.
I love
your newsletter, even as a non pilot you have a ton of interesting
information. A friend
and airline/ex-USAF pilot, Dave Cidale out your way directed me
to your website. It is a real good common sense source of
guidance. One reason he forwarded it to me is that I'm the
District Flight Safety Officer for the First US Coast Guard
District (North) and also an aircraft commander (i.e. the PIC),
for the civilian Auxiliary Air organization. Aux Air is really
drawn into regular CG ops now after 9-11, and we are pushing our
standards & capabilities towards theirs, by necessity.
Dave is involved, subject to his travels. Would you
permit me to pass some of this on to our guys (and girls)? Your
authorship would of course be acknowledged, & we can include
your website as a resource for them also. Reply: Of course . . . this is the intended purpose of "Over the Airwaves." Great publication! Just found out about it
from one of the other members of the Williamson Flying Club. I'll be sure to
alert others. (1-7-05) Where have you been all my life. Really good
stuff. Keep it up. Thanks for including the Rochester area pilots. (1-7-05) I am partner with John Telfeyan a subscriber to your newsletter (flyingjet@cox.net). He was raving about how well thought out and pertinent your news is to pilots especially with respect to IFR. He told me if you were closer (we have our aircraft at New Bedford Massachusetts) he would be getting instruction from you. (1-6-05) Dave Fredette, Aircraft owner, New Bedford, MA We just finished looking through the most recent issue of your "Over the Airwaves." Well done! (1-03-05) Sandy Hill, Director of Education, National Association of Flight Instructors. Nice newsletter! (1-2-05) George Graham, EAA Tech Counselor Sarasota Florida Chapter 180 member One of my Aviation Safety Counselors forwarded "Over the Airwaves" to me.. Super Stuff! (1-2-05) Obie Young, Safety Program Manager Orlando FSDO Thank you for the copy of
Over the Airwaves, which kept me rapt for more than half an hour. This is the
sort of writing that we at NAFI want to encourage. THANKS!! Great reading, great experience. John Lipiarz, WWII Pilot Your story regarding the TFR over Ft Campbell was terrific! As a pilot in the DC area, I am quite familiar with TFRs and of course ADIZs -- don't get me started :-) -- Particularly with the late released TFRs over Camp David, your story certainly hit home. Thanks for sharing! Stacy Platone - AOPA HQ I was skeptical that your weekly WNY flying oriented "magazine" was going to be worth my time. After the second one, I'm convinced that it is indeed worthwhile and I've notified all my WNY fellow pilots about this. Keep up the good work. Thom Riddle, Private Pilot since 1966
Just wanted to drop you a line and tell you how
appreciated your over the Airways a-mails are each week. This is the one of
the best Aviation information e-mails I've ever seen I think you're doing a
tremendous service to the pilots and getting out of up-to-date information
and safety tips. When I returned a Florida in about a month I intend to use
this in Florida and pass the information to the other pilots even though
it's a Western New York paper the information is good anywhere in the
country and should be utilized keep up the good work
Jim Kaletta, FAA Safety Counselor, Retired
Airline Pilot
Bob, I read Over the Airwaves from top to bottom. It's always filled with great stuff, and I've learned a lot from it. Fran Malcynski, RV6 Pilot, Homebuilder This is some of the
best flight safety information I've read. I look forward to every issue. CONGRATULATIONS ON PRODUCING ONE HECK OF A
NEWSLETTER.
EVERY PILOT SHOULD BE GRATEFUL TO YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO SHARE THE
INFORMATION AND KNOWLEDGE YOU HAVE. I finally got to visit your Over the Airwaves publication. It's GREAT! I now will catch it every time and will revisit the ones in the bank. Also, I'd like to add, your positions on the myriad topics very closely match my take on whatever the subject is. (great minds think alike). Dan Maloney, B-747 Captain, Northwest Airlines I get many different periodical concerning
aviation, but "Over the Airwaves" is the one that I look forward to the most. I
believe it's because what you write has a more personal aim toward me, rather
than a generic all-inclusive magazine that I never read cover to cover, because
of articles that just don't do a thing for me. I don't think I'll ever fly a
helicopter or a Lear jet, so I'm just not interested in reading about them. I do
however absorb all that you write. Thanks again, and please keep them coming. Another very thoughtful issue.. thanks,
Bob; keep up the good work! |
A friend sent me your "Over
The Airways" and it is a great job. I read every word and clicked on every
possible site. I anxiously await you next issue.
